Privacy and security

Your diary stays on your phone

Here's exactly where your health information lives, how it's protected and who can see it, in plain words.

Where your information goes

  1. Your phone Everything you record is saved here, encrypted. This is the only place your diary lives.
  2. Your email app Only when you tap Send. The report goes from your own email account, like any attachment you send.
  3. The people you choose Your GP, your specialist, a carer. Nobody else gets a copy.
  4. Not us Kind Witness has no server that stores diaries. We can't read your entries, because we never have them.

How it's protected

Encrypted on your phone

Your diary is kept in an encrypted database (AES-256), and every photo is encrypted as its own file. The key stays in your phone's secure storage: the Keychain on iPhone and the Keystore on Android.

Locked with Face ID, fingerprint or a PIN

Turn on app lock and Kind Witness asks every time it opens. Your entries are hidden in the app switcher, too.

Your own backup, not the cloud's

Your diary is left out of iCloud and Google backups. Kind Witness makes its own encrypted backup file instead, opened with a recovery code only you hold. Keep that code somewhere safe: without it, nobody can open the backup, including us.

Sent only when you choose

Reports leave your phone only when you tap Send, through your own email app. For extra care, Pro can put a password on the PDF.

No account, no ads, no tracking

There's no sign-up, no advertising and no analytics inside the app. Our App Store and Google Play privacy labels will say Data Not Collected.

Take it with you, or delete it all

Export everything whenever you like. In settings, Delete everything destroys the keys first, then your diary. Deleting the app also deletes your diary from your phone.

If you lose your phone

Without your phone's passcode, and your app lock if it's on, your diary can't be opened.

On your new phone, install Kind Witness, choose Restore, and open your latest backup file with your recovery code.
