If someone is having an asthma attack, follow their asthma action plan. What to record for asthma

Asthma usually shows up as wheezing, breathlessness, a tight chest or a cough, and it's often worse at night, early in the morning or when exercising. The asthma template asks about each episode, so the details are written down while they're fresh. Fill in what you can and skip anything you don't know. You can always come back later.

  • Wheeze
  • Cough
  • Breathlessness
  • Waking at night with asthma
  • How many reliever doses you needed
  • Your peak flow, if you measure it
  • When it started, and how long it lasted
  • What you were doing

For when you're short of breath

Log it in two taps

When symptoms start, two taps save the time. Fill in the rest when you can breathe easily again.

Count your reliever doses

Record each time you need your reliever, so you and your doctor can see how often you've needed it.

Peak flow, as you entered it

If you measure your peak flow, type in the reading. Kind Witness keeps it exactly as you enter it and never tells you what it means.

Note what was going on

Asthma triggers are different for different people. Common ones include colds and flu, cigarette smoke, cold air or changes in the weather, exercise, and allergy triggers such as dust mites, pollen, pets and mould. Tap any that were going on. Over time, your report shows how often each one came up, as plain counts.

Questions about asthma diaries

Does Kind Witness diagnose asthma?

No. Kind Witness is a diary. It records what you tell it and helps you share it. Only your doctor can tell you what it means. Read our medical disclaimer

Can a diary help before I have a diagnosis?

Yes. Asthma is often worse at night, early in the morning or when exercising, so writing symptoms down when they happen gives your doctor more to go on than memory alone.

What will my doctor ask about?

To see how well asthma is controlled in adults and teenagers, doctors look back over the past 4 weeks: symptoms during the day, any at night or on waking, any limits on what you could do, and how often you needed your reliever. Kind Witness records your symptoms, night waking and reliever doses, and anything else can go in your own words.

Can I note thunderstorms?

Yes. Tap Storm on an entry. Thunderstorm asthma can be sudden and serious, and people with asthma or hay fever can get severe asthma symptoms during grass pollen season.

Can I keep track of my medicines?

Yes. Record each medicine with its dose and when you take it, tick a missed or late dose, and mark when a medicine or dose changes. Anything else you notice can go in an entry in your own words.

Can I track asthma alongside allergies?

Yes. Many people with asthma also have allergic conditions, such as eczema or hay fever. Choose every condition that applies when you set up. Each entry uses the template you pick, and reports can show each condition on its own or all together. Allergy and reaction diary

Is my diary private?

Your diary is stored and encrypted on your phone. Nothing leaves it unless you send it. How we protect your diary

Is there a paper version?

Yes. The free printable symptom diary asks the same basic questions as the app, so you can fill it in by hand. Printable diaries
